The first habitants of the region used the
“sillar” to do the Petroglyphs and pictographs, today people are
still using this material to build houses.
The “sillar” identifies undoubtedly not only to Arequipa but the
indomitable character of its people.
The “sillar” unlike most people think, it wasn’t formed by the |

eruption of Misti volcano, but primarily is
the result of eruptions of another Volcano such as Chachani. Is
for this reason that most of the stone quarries are closer to
the Chachani, mainly in the district of Cerro Colorado,
therefore, we have the quarries of Anashuayco, the Cantarillas,
Grande Paqcha, Señor de la Cana, and Ciudad de Dios also know as
“Caleras from Yura”.
The white “sillar” is the most important because it is the most
compact and cohesive due to the volcanic lava was solidified
more slowly, making this material stone more solid and useful
for building houses.
Another type of “sillar” is the pink. This was use mainly in the
old constructions, but today it’s been use for new buildings as
an ornamental element, giving modern buildings a more
traditional finish in order to emphasize Arequipa’s nature and
style which is famous not only locally but all around the Nation.
